Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tigers Shut Out Mountaineers in 5-0 Home Opener

Greencastle, Ind.- In its home opener against Berea College, the DePauw men's soccer team came out on top, shutting out the Mountaineers 5-0. The Tigers improved to 1-0-1 for the season, while Berea dropped to 0-2.

Throughout the first half, DePauw put pressure on Berea early, getting 15 shots off while giving up just two on its defensive end. The Tigers finally found the back of the Mountaineers' net in the 42nd minute of play off a slip pass by Aidan Whitley, who found Braden Murphey sneaking past the Berea defenders for the first goal of the afternoon.

In the second half, Whitley earned his second assist of the day after AJ Hockstok sent a rocket from 30 yards out to put the Tigers up 2-0 with over 40 minutes left in regulation. Cayden Sumner stretched DePauw's lead to three after earning his first goal as a Tiger in the 61st minute of a rebounded shot.

DePauw's final two goals came in the 66th and 84th minute. Alec McCarty's redirected header placed the ball right in front of Nick Pease for goal number four, and the final goal was a solo effort by Joey Vehovsky to put the game away with five goals for the Tigers.

The DePauw Tigers outshot the Berea Mountaineers 34-5, 14 of which were on goal. The Tigers also held an advantage in corner kick attempts, forcing 12 corners while giving up just two on the other end. In goal, Sam Ortner faced just five shots, none of which were on goal, and the Mountaineers' Jadd Rogers finished the afternoon with nine saves.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, September 5, when they travel to Franklin College to face the Grizzlies at 7 p.m.
