Bloomington, Ill. - DePauw opened play at the two-day Illinois Wesleyan Tournament with a split including a 9-6 win over 15th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater and a 15-7 loss in five innings to Illinois Wesleyan. The Tigers moved to 10-10-1 on the season, while Wisconsin-Whitewater is now 13-1 and Illinois Wesleyan 12-6.
In the opener against Whitewater, the Tigers banged out 17 hits and never trailed on the way to the win. DePauw grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first before the Warhawks got on the board with a single run in the second. The Tigers added three in the third for their largest lead at 5-1. Wisconsin-Whitewater was within one run on two occasions with the last coming at 7-6 in the sixth before the Tigers added two in the seventh.
Nine different Tigers collected hits led by
Katie Mathies with four and
Kelsey Bernhard and
Riley Heim with three each.
Ella Kuenster added two along with three RBI.
Sophia Kinjerski had four of the Warhawks' 14 hits followed by Grace Wickman with three and two each from Maggie Ward, Kiarra Kostroski and Taylor Koehler.
Alex Romero-Salas improved to 8-3 with the win, while Rhiann Dick dropped to 1-1.
Against the host Titans, DePauw trailed 2-1 after the first, but Illinois Wesleyan scored six each in the second and third, while the Tigers put up four in the second and two in the third. IWU added one in the fifth and held DePauw scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to take the win with the run-rule.
Mathies had three of DePauw's eight hits to finish 7-for-7 for the day, while
Libby Minobe finished with two.
The Titans totaled 18 hits with Hailey Milgazo, Jen Kuhn, Bailey Turner and Elyssa Stenger finishing with three each. Anna Beckman, Casey Wissmiller and Ava Khoury each had two.
Romero-Salas dropped to 8-4 and Mallory Holland improved to 1-0.
DePauw faces Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CDT and Illinois Wesleyan at 4 p.m. CDT.
