Oberlin, Ohio - DePauw opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep at Oberlin by scores of 2-1 and 8-7. The Tigers improved to 11-8 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while the Yeomen dropped to 11-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
In the opener, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first as
Danny Glimco's grounder scored
Aidan Howard. Howard's fifth-inning double scored
Carter Knoll to make it 2-0.
Oberlin's lone run came in the seventh as Grayson Black singled home Anton Shelton.
Howard, Knoll and
Grady Johnson each had one hit for the Tigers. Kyle Baxt and Shelton each had two of Oberlin's five hits.
Michael Vallone moved to 4-0 with the complete game win as he struck out 11 and walked just one. Jay Aghanya dropped to 1-2 with the loss after going the distance and striking out 13.
In the nightcap, DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Glimco singled home Johnson and Knoll brought home Glimco with a base hit. Howard's single in the second plated
Louis Florida and extended the Tigers' lead to 3-0.
Oberlin reached the board in the third as Brady Groves reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Sean Livingtone to score. Zach Masnikoff singled home Black and Joe Strabley with a fifth-inning single before Ethan Hurwitz drove in Masnikoff with a base hit and Baxt's sacrifice fly scored Groves and made it 5-3.
DePauw regained the lead in the sixth as
Drew Straub's sacrifice fly scored
Hunter Hrbek and Johnson's double brought home
Max Bond. Howard scored on a wild pitch, giving the Tigers a 6-5 advantage.Â
Hrbek's solo homer in the seventh and
Max Bond's ninth-inning bunt single that brought home Florida made it 8-5.Â
Aghanya reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth that allowed Strabley to score and Groves' grounder brought home Aghanya to close the gap to 8-7. Hurwitz then hit a drive to right center, but Glimco made a diving catch to end the game and preserve the win.
Howard, Johnson, Knott and Bond each had two of DePauw's 11 hits with Strabley collecting two of Oberlin's six hits.
Griffin Albright moved to 2-1 with the relief win, while
Charlie Hawk earned his second save and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings. Zachary Ritts dropped to 2-2.
DePauw returns to NCAC action on Tuesday, April 9, when it hosts Wabash in a Noon doubleheader.
