Granville, Ohio - DePauw knocked off second-ranked Denison,7-6 in game one of the North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader and the Big Red came back with a 7-1 win in the nightcap for the split. The Tigers moved to 18-11 overall and 8-2 in the NCAC, while the Big Red are 28-4 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
In the opener, DePauw scored three in the first inning as
Carter Knoll drove in
Louis Florida with a single before
Grady Johnson came home when
Hunter Hrbek reached on an error. Knoll then scored on a wild pitch.
Jake Welsch doubled home Eli Aronson in the bottom of the first and Alex Vasquez's sacrifice bunt in the second scored Cade Nowik and cut the DePauw lead to 4-2.
Cameron Macon's solo homer in the fourth extended DePauw's lead to 4-2, but Denison evened the score in the bottom of the frame on Nowik's sacrifice fly and Owen Wilson's RBI single that brought home Jake Blozy.
The Tigers regained the lead in the fifth on
Danny Glimco's double that plated Macon. Wilson's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 5-5.
DePauw took the lead for good in the seventh when
Grady Johnson singled home
Max Bond and Florida.
Denison's final run came in the seventh when Eric Colaco scored on a balk. The Big Red had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, but the Tigers held on for the win.
Macon had four of DePauw's 12 hits, while Florida, Johnson and Knoll each had two. Blozy and Wilson each had two of Denison's 10 hits.
Jake Thometz improved to 1-0, while
Josh Heitert collected his first save. Ryan Starr dropped to 1-1.
Denison grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on Noah Leib's sacrifice fly and Welsch's RBI single. Welsch's single in the third scored two and pushed the Big Red lead to 4-0.
DePauw reached the board in the sixth on Glimco's sacrifice fly.
The Big Red tacked on three more in the seventh as Nowik was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Wilson's grounder scored Welsch and Colin Ravin came home when Max Fishbein reached on an error.
Johnson had two of DePauw's four hits. Jack Lutte has three of Denison's 10 hits with Leib, Welsch and Ravin each adding two.
Justin Benes dropped to 0-1, while P Lemke improved to 6-0 and Jack Rollo collected his second save.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 27, when it hosts Kenyon in a Noon doubleheader.
