Greencastle, Ind.: DePauw men's lacrosse remains undefeated at home after defeating Trine University 8-3. The Tigers improve to 3-2 for the season while the Thunder drop to 3-3.
The two teams battled for position and were scoreless for the first ten minutes of the game; however, in a man-up situation and with 5:16 left in the first quarter,
Connor Gibson found
Henry White for his first of two goals for the day. DePauw would capitalize on its second man-up play just two minutes later when
Jack Neff connected with
Gavin Berry to put the Tigers up 2-0 heading into the second.
At 12:26 in the second quarter, White scored his second goal of the day following a pass from
Charlie Rodriguez. DePauw would hold Trine scoreless until 3:20 of the second quarter when the Thunder's Peter Piccillo found Noah Markus in a man-up situation, cutting the Tigers lead to two.
Coming out of halftime, DePauw found its rhythm, putting in four goals across almost 20 minutes of play while giving up nothing on the other end. Trine would eventually tack on two more goals in the fourth quarter, bringing the Thunder within five. However, the Tigers continued to turn up the pressure defensively and held off any chance of a comeback.
Berry led DePauw with three goals, followed by
Jack Flynn and White with two each. White tallied three assists, and Neff tacked on two more for five of the eight assists against Trine. Markus, Mason Levin, and Charlie Anderson scored a goal for the Thunder.
Anthony Reinhardt finished the afternoon with 16 saves and credited for an assist to Flynn in the third. Nick DiPaolo totaled seven saves for Trine.
Matthew Garrigan and Reinhardt led DePauw with five ground balls apiece, and
Matthew Roman won 5-13 faceoffs.
Nick Weyhmueller and Garrigan each caused three turnovers.
Goalkeeper DiPaolo totaled five ground balls for the Thunder, and Levin caused four turnovers.
DePauw outshot Trine, 39-24, and held a slight 27-24 edge in ground balls. The Tigers were 22-30 in clear attempts, while the Thunder finished the afternoon 13-18.
DePauw travels to Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, March 16, to face the Illinois Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. CDT.
