Colorado Springs, Colo. - DePauw trailed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-5, midway through the second period, but the Athenas scored the final four goals of the second and the first four of the third and pulled away for a 21-8 victory over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 5-3, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improved to 7-2.
The Tigers evened the score early with back-to-back scores from
Emily Napier and
Bridget Driscoll. The Athenas grabbed a 4-3 lead after Stella Hansot scored with 17 seconds left in the opening stanza.
The teams exchanged two scores each to start the second period with Driscoll's score with 10:23 left in the half bringing the Tigers within one at 6-5.
DePauw suffered a blow when goalie
Lydia Hollis had to leave the game due to injury. The Athenas took a 10-5 lead at the intermission and outscored the Tigers, 11-3, in the second half.
Napier paced DePauw with four goals and Driscoll added three with
Marley Heitman totaling two assists. Hollis had eight saves for the Tigers with
Delana Underwood totaling three.
Hannah Conte led the Athenas with four goals with Grace Mintrum and Annie Parizeau adding three each. Parizeau and Cate Lewisonn eac had three assists.
Driscoll led DePauw with five draw controls and
Sydney Shields had five ground balls. Driscoll, Heitman and Underwood each caused two turnovers.
Julia Ryan paced Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with 12 draw controls, while Mintrum had four ground balls and Audrey Donahue caused two turnovers.
The Athenas held a 37-22 edge in shots including 32-18 on goal. DePauw had 26 ground balls to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' 27 and the Tigers committed 22 turnovers to the Athenas' 20.
DePauw opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 6, when it hosts Oberlin at 1 p.m.
