Newport News, Va. - DePauw wrapped up its spring break trip to Virginia with a sweep of fifth-ranked Christopher Newport as the Tigers won the opener 9-6Â before taking game two by a 7-5 score. The Tigers improved to 9-9-1 on the season, while the Captains are now 15-4.
In the opener, DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as
Ella Ohrvall singled with one out and stole second before
Katie Mathies hit her third homer of the season.
Christopher Newport responded in the second as Marly Hoefler tied the game with a two-run triple. Delaney Nuckols followed with a single that scored Hoefler and Nuckols later scored on Candace Slaw's double.
DePauw came back with a single run in the third as
Macey Cox led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on
Goose Moore's sacrifice bunt and scored on
Kiwi Moran's bunt.
The Captains extended the lead to 6-3 in the fourth as Kendall Bentley led off with a triple and scored on Hoefler's single. Hoefler stole second and later scored when Slaw singled.
Mathies drove in a pair with a fifth-inning single and
Emily Timberman brought home two with a double before
Kelsey Bernhard delivered an RBI single to give the Tigers an 8-6 advantage.
DePauw added an insurance run in the seventh as Timberman scored after an error following
Ella Kuenster's single.
Mathies had three of DePauw's 11 hits with Timberman and Cox adding two each. Slaw and Hoefler each had two of the Captains' eight hits.
Alex Romero-Salas moved to 6-3 after pitching four scoreless inning and allowing just two hits. Kate Alger dropped to 7-3.
In the second game, the Tigers again took a 2-0 lead as
Lauren Sizemore hit her first collegiate homer after Timberman led off the inning with a single.
Paige Brady drew a bases loaded walk in the third to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Captains reached the board in the third after Brooke Greaver walked with the bases loaded, but DePauw responded in the fourth when
Alyssa Anderson doubled home Kuenster to make it 4-1.
Katie Currin brought the hosts within one run with a two-run homer in the fifth before Kuenster tripled home Ohrvall in the sixth to push the DePauw lead to 5-3. Nuckols evened the score at 5-5 with a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth.
Mathies led off the DePauw seventh with a single and Moore came in to run and advanced to second when Timberman reached on a fielder's choice. Each moved up on a wild pitch and the game was then suspended for a short time as the field was tended to as the light rain continued.
When play resumed,
Libby Minobe drove in Moore when she reached on a fielder's choice. Timberman then came home on
Ashtyn Barnett's grounder.Â
Currin led off the Captains' seventh by being hit by a pitch before the next three hitter flied out to end the game.
Kuenster, Mathies and Timberman each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Slaw and Jules Donnelly each had two of the Captains' eight hits.
Romero-Salas improved to 7-3 with the complete game win, while Jamie Martin dropped to 3-1.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 6, at the Illinois Wesleyan Softball Tournament.
