Lynchburg, Va. - DePauw opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader at 23rd-ranked Lynchburg and came away with a split including a 9-7 win in the opener and a 3-0 loss in the nightcap. The Tigers are now 7-8, while the Hornets moved to 14-4.
In the opener, DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Ella Ohrvall singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out before coming home on
Emily Timberman's homer to center.
Lynchburg evened the score in the second as Lexi Powell led off with a walk, advanced to second on Madison Barnes' sacrifice bunt and to third on Addison Walter's single. Jessica Strickland then delivered a two-out triple to right.
Timberman gave the Tigers the lead in the sixth as she hit a one-out solo homer to left center.Â
Riley Heim and
Macey Cox each singled with one out in the seventh and then advanced with stolen bases before
Kiwi Moran reached on a sacrifice bunt that scored Heim.
Libby Minobe entered as a runner for Moran and stole second before
Katie Mathies plated Cox with a base hit. Mathies moved up on a wild pitch and Timberman singled home Minobe and Mathies came home after Timberman got in a rundown between first and second.
Hanna Coffel came in to run for Timberman and scored on
Ella Kuenster's singled.
Alyssa Anderson's double brought home Kuenster to make it 9-2.
Strickland was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh before Kaleigh Hackett reached on an error and Sarah Watts loaded the bases with a single. Alex DiNardo's single scored Strickland and Georgia Thompson's grounder brought home Hackett to make it 9-4. Zoe Elliott's single scored Watts and Barnes followed with a double that plated Alyssa Talayumptewa and Powell to make it 9-7.
Riley Depa entered in the circle for the Tigers and, after Walter was hit by a pitch, Martin grounded out to end the game.
Timberman had four of DePauw's 12 hits and Heim added two. Strickland and Barnes each had two of the Hornets' nine hits.
Peyton Rohr moved to 1-1 with the win, while Kailey Drocsis dropped to 7-2. Depa collected her first save.
In the nightcap, all of the game's runs came in the Lynchburg half of the second. Martin was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on Elliott's sacrifice. After Hodges walked, Powell singled to load the bases. Walter singled home Martin before Strickland walked and Hackett hit a sacrifice fly.
Three different Tigers collected one hit each as the Tigers left eight runners stranded including two each in three innings. Four different Hornets had one hit apiece.
Alex Romero-Salas dropped to 5-3 with the loss, while Logan Curtis improved to 2-1 with the shutout.
DePauw travels to Randolph Macon for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26.Â
