Elizabethtown, Ky. - A 7-6, eight-inning, walkoff win over ninth-ranked Transylvania gave DePauw a split of its games at the Pioneer Classic after the Tigers earlier lost to top-ranked Trine, 9-1. DePauw is now 6-7 on the season after splitting the four contests at the Classic.
In the afternoon game against Transylvania, the Pioneers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on Carson Murray's two-run double to center. They made it 3-0 in the second on Ella Steczynski's sacrifice fly. Stella Wulker's double down the left field line in the third brought home Dakota Burke and Wulker later scored after Addy Mack was caught stealing to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Tigers started their scoring in the bottom of the third when
Libby Minobe singled with one out and stole second.
Goose Moore then followed with an RBI single.
DePauw added two more in the fourth as
Ella Kuenster singled with one out and scored on an error on
Kelsey Bernhard's base hit. Bernhard crossed the plate when
Alyssa Anderson grounded out.
Madi Lockridge led off the DePauw seventh by being hit by a pitch and moved to third on Minobe's double.
Riley Heim's grounder to first scored Lockridge and Minobe moved to third.
Katie Mathies reached on a fielder's choice that scored Minobe and evened the score at 5-5.
Emily Timberman walked but the Tigers left the two runners stranded and moved to extra innings.
Transylvania scored in the top of the eighth as Steczysnki was placed on second, moved to third on Burke's bunt single and scored on Wulker's single to center. The Tigers got out of the jam after Izzy Story flied out to right and Burke was thrown out at the plate on the play before Murray flied out to center.
Bernhard was placed on second to start the Tigers' eighth and she scored when Anderson reached on a throwing error.
Macey Cox entered as a pinch-runner and moved to third on
Hanna Coffel's sacrifice bunt.
Kiwi Moran then delivered the single that brought home Cox with the game-winning run.
Minobe and Bernhard each had two of DePauw's 10 hits, while Burke and Welker each had three of the Pioneers' 11 hits.
Alex Romero-Salas picked up the complete game win and didn't walk a batter in eight innings in improving to 5-2. N Contreras took the loss and dropped to 4-2.
In the opener against Trine, the Thunder took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Debbie Hill's two-run homer before adding three more in the third.
DePauw reached the scoreboard in the fourth as Timberman singled and pinch-runner Lockridge scored on Kuenster's double to right.
Trine ended the game with the run-rule in the fifth as Talisa Chafey drove in three with a double and then pinch-runner Emma Beyer scored on Emma Lee's double to left center.
Three Tigers collected one hit apiece, while Lee, Karley Trine, Macy Rocha and Tyra Marcum each had two of the Thunder's 10 hits.
Josi Hair dropped to 1-2 with the loss, while Hill improved to 4-0.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, March 24, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Lynchburg.
