Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw overcame a 15-point deficit, but Denison forced overtime with a late three-point play and outscored the Tigers in the extra sessions, 13-9, on the way to a 75-71 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 11-12 overall and 6-8 in the NCAC, while the Big Red improved to 13-10 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
Denison scored the game's first 11 points, but DePauw chipped away at the deficit and trailed, 13-9, after
Grant Gohmann's hook shot.capped a 7-0 run. The Big Red responded by scoring nine straight at the start of a 13-2 stretch that gave Denison its largest lead of the game at 26-11 with 5:53 left in the half.
DePauw then scored 10 straight and eventually closed the gap to two before the Big Red closed the half with a 7-0 spurt to take a 34-25 halftime lead.
The Big Red scored the first four of the second half to push the lead to 13. DePauw closed the margin back to five before Denison extended it to nine at 49-40 with 10:39 remaining.
Caleb Washington buried a three before
Casey Kaelin made four straight free throws and Washington made another trey to give DePauw its first lead of the game at 50-49 with 8:25 left.
Denison's Kellon Smith ended the run with a three but
Reph Stevenson countered with a basket and
Sam Jacobs added a layup and a jumper to give the Tigers a 56-52 lead and cap a 16-3 rally.
The Big Red regained the lead at 59-58 on Trevor Reed's trey with 3:39 remaining which ended a 7-2 run. Stevenson came back with a second-chance bucket and Jacobs pushed the Tigers' lead to 62-59 with a layup.
Denison followed with a miss before the Tigers turned it over with 36 seconds remaining. Tyler Miller drove the lane for a bucket and converted a free throw to even the count with 17 seconds left. The Tigers were unable to deliver the game-winner and the teams went to overtime.
In the extra session, DePauw led, 66-64, after Kaelin's layup, but Denison scored the next nine to wrap up the win.
Jacobs paced DePauw with 21 points and five assists, while Washington followed with 19. Stevenson led with 10 rebounds and just missed a double-double with nine points
Cameron Smith led Denison with 15 points followed by Emmett Burnside and Reed with 13 each and Miller with 12. Burnside, Gates Flynn and Scotty Dean each had four assists and Burnside had a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
DePauw shot 41.0 percent from the field to Denison's 39.4 percent and the Tigers held a 41-38 rebounding edge. DePauw committed 16 turnovers to Denison's 11.
The Tigers return to NCAC play on Saturday, Feb. 10, with a 4 p.m. game at Oberlin.
