Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Wabash scored 16 straight over a 4:10 stretch of the first half and pulled away for a 74-48 win over DePauw in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools. The Tigers dropped to 2-5, while the Little Giants improved to 3-5.
The Little Giants held a 10-6 lead in the opening six minutes of the first half before nailing all four of its 3-point shots and holding the Tigers without a field goal in its five tries to push the lead to 26-6 with 10:00 left in the half.Â
Sam Jacobs stopped the run with a 3-pointer at the 9:24 mark, but Randy Kelley countered with a trey to start a 7-0 run which expanded the Little Giants' lead to 33-9 with 4:59 remaining in the half. Wabash took a 43-21 advantage into the halftime.
DePauw rattled off nine straight to open the second half capped by
Billy Bach's layup with 16:12 left which cut the Wabash lead to 43-30. Robert Sorensen came right back with a three to push the lead to 16. The Tigers were still within 15 at 48-33, but Wabash's Vinny Buccilla nailed a three and the Tigers were no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
Jacobs, playing in his first game of the season after a pre-season injury, led the Tigers with 18 points,while Bach,
Caleb Washington and
Brady Kunka each had six rebounds and
Patrick Joyce dished out five assists.
Sorensen led Wabash with 21 points with Buccilla chipping in 15 and Mate Matelic 12. Matelic and Gavin Schippert each had eight rebounds with Josh Whack leading with seven assists. Noah Hupmann had four of Wabash's seven blocked shots.
The Tigers shot just 28.6 percent from the field to Wabash's 50.9 percent and the Little Giants knocked in 12-of-25 3-pointers to DePauw's 3-of-16. The Tigers held a 38-35 rebounding edge and snapped 15 on the offensive glass.
DePauw hosts Kenyon on Saturday, Dec. 7, in a 5 p.m. NCAC game.
