Daytona Beach, Fla. - In a tight game throughout, Lawrence held on for a 58-57 win over DePauw in both teams' opening games at the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Tigers dropped to 4-4, while the Vikings improved to 7-3.
DePauw gained its largest lead of the game at 8-4 and held a 16-15 advantage at the opening quarter break. Lawrence earned its largest advantage of the game at 26-20, but the Tigers nailed 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions in a 2:11 stretch to gain a 32-28 advantage at the intermission.
The Vikings opened the second half on a 13-4 run to grab a 5-point lead at 41-36 and took a 45-42 advantage into the final period.
Moira McGinley's layup followed by an
Ainsley Boras free throw and an
Ava Hassel basket gave the Tigers a 47-45 lead with 8:20 remaining. The teams exchanged buckets before Lawrence scored six straight to grab a 53-49 lead with 4:39 left.
Boras converted a 3-point play at the 3:42 mark to cut the deficit to 53-52 and DePauw regained the lead at 54-53 after Hassel made a pair of free throws with 2:02 remaining.
Mallory Meyer's 3-point play with 1:03 left gave Lawrence the lead at 56-54. The Tigers were unable to convert a couple of shots on the offensive end, but a Lawrence turnover gave the ball back to DePauw with nine seconds left.
Riley Mont was fouled and connected on one-of-two free throws, but Lawrence gained control of the rebound. Charlotte Brennan's two charity tosses with six seconds remaining extended the Lawrence lead to three.
The Tigers missed a 3-point shot which Mont rebounded and her put-back closed the gap to one as time expired.
Hassel led DePauw with 12 points with Mont chipping in 11 and 12 rebounds. Boras dished out a team-high three assists.
Kate Adams paced Lawrence with 13 points, while Meyer added 12 and Brennan 11. Maggie Culver hauled down five rebounds.
The Tigers shot 31.7 percent from the field including 8-of-32 from 3-point range, but missed on all 14 chances from beyond the arc in the second half. Lawrence shot 41.2 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from 3-point range. DePauw held a 45-32 rebounding edge for a 13-0 lead in second-chance points, but the Tigers committed 16 turnovers to the Vikings' 11.
DePauw wraps up play in the Shootout tomorrow with a 10 a.m. game against LeTourneau.
