Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw trailed by as many as seven points, but rallied in the second half for a 67-57 win over visiting Rose-Hulman in the season opener for both schools.
A first half that included eight ties and 11 lead changes ended with Joey Schmitz burying a three at the buzzer to give Rose-Hulman a 38-34 lead.
Schmitz hit a trey early in the second half to push the lead to 41-34, but
Billy Bach and
Caleb Washington countered with threes to cut the deficit to 41-40.
The Tigers briefly gained a one-point lead on
Kyle Lillwitz's driving layup before Rose-Hulman scored the next five to make it 48-44. Rose-Hulman was still within three at 57-54 with just over five minutes left.Â
Eli Ellis hit two free throws before Washington scored on a layup and Bach and
Reph Stevenson each hit one free throw, the latter coming with 2:31 left to push the lead to 63-54. Kobe Stoudemire's three stopped the run, but DePauw scored the final four and held the Fightin' Engineers scoreless over the final two minutes.
Washington and
Brady Kunka each scored 14 in the win with Lillwitz adding 13. Washington added 12 for a double-double and Lillwitz dished out three assists.
Schmitz paced Rose-Hulman with 12 points followed by a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds from Miles McGowen and 10 points from Stoudemire.
DePauw shot 39.3 percent from the floor to Rose-Hulman's 28.4 percent. Rose-Hulman held a 46-44 rebounding lead and had 10 turnovers to the Tigers' 15.
