Tigers Fall in Overtime to Vikings

Greencastle, Ind. - Augustana forced overtime with a bucket late in regulation before opening the extra session with a 15-1 run on the way to an 84-73 victory over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 1-2, while the Vikings improved to 3-0.

Patrick Joyce's basket with 9.0 seconds left gave DePauw a 66-64 lead, but Mike Hamilton's dunk with 3.2 seconds remaining evened the count. The Tigers got the ball to Joyce but his layup didn't fall as the buzzer sounded and the teams went to overtime.

Tyler Knuth opened the overtime with a three-point play before DePauw's Caleb Washington hit the second of two free throws to cut the lead to 69-67. Knuth and Evan Ambrose nailed threes on back-to-back possessions to start a stretch of 12 straight points on the way to the win.

The game was tight throughout as neither team had more than a four-point lead until the Vikings rattled off 11 straight late in the first half to grab a 30-23 advantage. Divine Adeyanju converted a three-point play before Caleb Washington made two free throws and scored a putback just before the half ended to even the score at 30-30.

DePauw led the majority of the second half and pushed the lead to 50-44 after Joyce knocked in a 3-pointer with 9:08 remaining. Augustana evened the count at 55-55 and again at 58-58 before Washington's basket put DePauw ahead 60-58 with 3:59 remaining.

Hamilton's bucket at the 3:40 mark evened the score at 60-60, but he wasn't able to convert the free throw for the three-point play. The Vikings, however, snagged the rebound and Chase Larsen made it 62-60 with 3:30 left giving Augustana its first lead since the opening minute of the second half.

Another Washington layup was matched by Kelley Staishaun's two free throws before Billy Bach drew DePauw even at 64-64 with a layup at the 1:45 mark. Neither team scored until Joyce's jumper with nine seconds left. After Hamilton's dunk, Washington fired the inbounds pass to Adeyanju just beyond half court who lobbed it to Joyce but his layup hit the rim and rolled off.

Washington equaled a career high with 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Kyle Lillwitz scored 16 and Adeyanju added a career-best 13 along with three blocks. Joyce dished out four assists.

Knuth paced Augustana with 23 points with Evan Ambrose following with 17, Larsen 15 and Kelley 14. Larsen and Colton Gillingham each grabbed nine rebounds.

DePauw shot 39.1 percent from the floor to Augustana's 39.7 percent. Each team attempted 26 3-pointers with the Vikings hitting seven to the Tigers' five. Augustana converted 23-of-30 free throws to DePauw's 14-of-22. DePauw held a 47-41 rebounding edge but committed 20 turnovers to the Vikings' 12.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 23, when they face Hanover in a 2 p.m. game at Earlham in the Melissa Johnson/Hope Classic.
