Richmond, Ind. - Hanover outscored DePauw, 6-0, over the final 49 seconds and claimed a 78-72 victory over the Tigers at Earlham's Melissa Johnson/HOPE Classic. The Panthers improved to 4-0, while DePauw dropped to 1-3.
DePauw scored the game's first nine points and led by as many as 11 in the opening half before the Panthers closed on a 13-4 run to cut the Tigers' lead to 41-37 at the break.
The Tigers stretched the margin to six early in the second half, but the Panthers scored seven straight to take their first lead of the game at 44-43. DePauw rattled off eight straight and held the lead until midway through the second before Hanover scored seven in a row to grab a 63-57 advantage.
Hanover maintained the lead until
Reph Stevenson converted a 3-point play with 5:35 left to even the score at 67-67.Â
The game was still tied after DePauw's
Patrick Joyce scored with 1:17 left. Michael Donoho countered with a bucket with 49 seconds left, but a DePauw turnover gave the ball back to the Panthers. Cam Freeman missed the front end of a one-and-one, but another DePauw turnover was followed by two free throws from Kyle Crim which gave Hanover a 76-72 lead with 17 seconds left.
DePauw missed a jumper and Jack Miller sealed the win with two free throws.
Kyle Lillwitz led DePauw with 17 points, while
Reph Stevenson added 16 and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Caleb Washington followed with 14 points and
Brady Kunka added 10.. Lillwitz and Kunka each had three assists.
Coleman Sater paced Hanover with 15 points, while Crim added 14 and Donoho 12. Avery Saunders led Hanover with five rebounds and Donoho had three steals.
DePauw shot 47.3 percent from the field to Hanover's 43.1 percent, while the Panthers hit 11-of-24 from 3-point range and the Tigers made 10-of-24. DePauw outrebounded Hanover, 41-29, but the Tigers committed 17 turnovers to Hanover's five which led to the Panthers holding a 24-5 edge in points off of turnovers.
The Tigers face Earlham tomorrow at 4 p.m.
