Lexington, Ky. - In a game which Transylvania led most of the way, DePauw closed to within three early in the fourth period, but the host Pioneers scored 13 straight to put the game away in a 59-40 win over the Tigers. DePauw, ranked 22nd in the coaches' preseason poll and 24th by D3football.com, dropped to 1-2, while Transylvania, ranked 15th by the coaches and 17th in D3hoops.com, improved to 2-1.
DePauw held a 5-3 lead midway through the first, but Transylvania closed the period with a 9-7 advantage. The Pioneers' lead reached as many as eight in the second period before the Tigers closed the gap to 24-19 at the intermission.
Transylvania led, 40-32, after three and stretched it to nine in the opening minute of the fourth.
Ava Hassel's layup followed by a couple of buckets from
Ainsley Boras trimmed the Pioneers' lead to 41-38 with 7:50 left.
Five straight free throws by the hosts started a 13-0 run that gave them a 54-38 lead with 2:42 left . During the stretch the Tigers missed six field goals and two free throws. DePauw stopped the run as Lilly Huntzinger hit a jumper, but Transylvania hit five three throws in the final 1:22 to seal the win.
Diana Burgher led DePauw with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Boras chipped in 10 points.
Sadie Wurth led Transylvania with 27 points with Riley Flinn grabbing 15 rebounds.
DePauw shot just 25.8 percent from the floor and hit just 1of-12 from 3-point range. The Pioneers connected on 34.0 percent from the field and held a 44-40 rebounding edge.Â
The Tigers host Albion on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m.
