Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw scored the final five points of the third period and the first five of the fourth to stretch a one-point lead to 11 on the way to a 60-50 win over visiting Albion. The Tigers improved to 2-2, while the Britons dropped to 1-3.
DePauw closed the opening period on a 6-0 run with 3-pointers from
Lily Huntzinger and
Ava Hassel to take a 16-8 lead at the quarter break.Â
Diana Burgher nailed a three in the opening minute of the second, but it was the last DePauw field goal until 40 seconds remained in the half as the Tigers scored just seven in the quarter but still held a 23-19 advantage at the intermission.
Albion closed the gap to one on three occasions during the third, but Hassel hit two free throws and Burgher converted a three-point play to push DePauw's lead to 39-33 as the third period ended. Huntzinger made a free throw and a bucket before
Asya Smith scored on a break to make it 44-33 with 8:16 left.
The margin reached a high of 14 at 54-40 following Burgher's two free throws with 2:48 remaining. Albion trimmed the deficit to single digits, but the Tigers hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 38 seconds and held on for the win.
Hassel led the Tigers with 17 points and a career-high seven steals, while Burgher,
Ainsley Boras and Huntzinger each scored 10. Burgher grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Meghan Trewhella and Ava Guilford each scored 15 for the Britons with DJ Pannell chipping in 12. Emma Cooke grabbed seven rebounds.
Both teams shot 33.9 percent from the floor with Albion hitting 8-of-21 from 3-point range to the Tigers' 4-of-18. DePauw outscored the Britons, 18-2, from the line and held a 47-29 rebounding edge.
DePauw travels to WashU on Saturday, Nov. 30, for a 4 p.m. CST game against Illinois Wesleyan in the Midwest Challenge.
