Gambier, Ohio- The DePauw men's soccer team opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a 3-2 loss to No. 4 Kenyon College. The Tigers dropped to 6-3-2 for the season and 0-1 in NCAC competition, while the Owls improved to 7-0-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.Â
The Owls struck first in the 17th minute of play following a cleared ball that led to a well-timed counterattack that put Kenyon up 1-0 early. The Owls would strike again in the 25th minute following a diving save by Sam Ortner to extend Kenyons' lead by two. Unwilling to go down easily, the Tigers would respond with their own goal following a poorly cleared corner. Alec McCarty found AJ Hockstok, who set up Harrison Engel to cut the Owls' lead in half. DePauw knotted the game at two apiece in the 41st minute when Sebastian Leon scored after a corner kick attempt.Â
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Kenyon put the game away with its third and final goal in the 43rd minute. Both teams battled it out in the second half; however, the Owls held tight to their lead and kept DePauw at bay.
The two teams were neck and neck in shots and corner attempts. Kenyon held a one-shot edge over DePauw, putting up 12 shots to the Tigers' 11. Though the shot attempts were close, the Owls put ten of their 12 shots on goal. As for corner kick attempts, the two teams finished with six corner kicks each. The Tigers' goalkeeper Ortner completed the game with a season-high six saves, while the Owls' Jack Pedreschi tallied just one.
