Tigers Outlast the Owls 3-2 to Open Conference Play

Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw field hockey team defeated Kenyon College 3-2 at home in its first home North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup. The Tigers improved to 6-4 on the season and 4-0 in NCAC competition, while the Owls moved to 6-4 overall and hold an NCAC record of 3-3.

After a scoreless first half, the Tigers found the back of the Owls cage first. In the 32nd minute of play Alexandra May deflected a pass from Hailey Nowak to put the Tigers up 1-0. The Owls would knot the game at a one in the 35th minute following a scramble in front of the goal off a corner by Kenyon's Maggie Wallace, who found teammate Maren Lawrence for the tying goal.

Two minutes later, the Owls would take the lead after a failed clear attempt found its way to Kenyon's Grace Lane, who rocketed it back towards the Tigers' cage, putting the Owls up 2-1. Not willing to back down, May and Nowak worked together again to tie the game at two apiece heading into the fourth period.

DePauw pressured Kenyon's defensive line immediately at the start of the fourth period, resulting in back-to-back-to-back penalty corners. In the 51st minute, the Tigers' aggressiveness paid off. Amy Apfelbaum held possession of the ball deep into the Owls' defensive circle and slipped a quick backhand pass to Nowak, who ultimately scored the game-winning goal.

DePauw completed the afternoon with a 25-3 advantage in shots and secured a 14-1 edge in penalty corners. In the cage for the Tigers, Bella Lauber and Scarlett Oaks split time, with Oaks recording one save for the afternoon. The Owls' Megan Lydon tallied 10 saves.

DePauw will return to Greencastle on Saturday, October 12, to host Allegheny College at 12 p.m. EDT at home for its next NCAC match.
