Greencastle, Ind.: The DePauw men's soccer team secured its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory after defeating Wittenberg University 2-0. The DePauw Tigers improved to 7-3-3 for the season and 1-1-1 in conference play, while the Wittenberg Tigers dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1 in NCAC play.
Â
In the battle of the Tigers, DePauw dominated early, scoring its first goal in the sixth minute of play off a well-placed shot by first-year
Julian Bell. DePauw held its hosts to just three shots in the first half, ultimately stifling any chance for Wittenberg to tie the game before the second half.Â
Â
Up 1-0 heading into the second half, DePauw continued to find success on its offensive end, putting up nine shots while giving up just two shots and a corner-kick attempt throughout the second half. The DePauw Tigers put the game away in the 82nd minute when
Ethan Webster found
Harrison Engel for goal number two of the night. With a two-goal lead and eight minutes left in regulation, DePauw continued to keep the offensive pressure on shooting three more shots to close out the game.
Â
DePauw held a 16-5 advantage in shot attempts and a 3-1 edge in corner attempts. In this highly physical matchup, ten cards were issued. However, just three yellow cards were issued to DePauw. In goal,
Sam Ortner directed his defensive backline but faced no shots on target. Wittenberg's Peter Adams finished the evening with five saves.
