Tigers Remain Undefeated in Conference After Shutting out Presidents

Story Links

Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw field hockey team beat the Washington & Jefferson Presidents 8-0 at home to extend its win streak to five. The Tigers moved to 8-4 for the season and 6-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while the Presidents dropped to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Scoring in all four quarters, the DePauw Tigers dominated play from the start, not only finding the back of W&J's cage eight times but stifling all of the President's chances to score on their defensive end. DePauw's first goal of the afternoon came in the sixth minute when Hailey Nowak corralled a pass off a corner and found Maggie Volpe. Three minutes later, Nowak would slip through Washington & Jefferson's defense for goal number two for the Tigers. In the 14th minute of the first quarter, Tiala Ortega skipped a pass across the striking circle to Volpe for her second goal of the game, putting DePauw up 3-0.

In the second quarter, the Presidents turned up their intensity and held the Tigers to just one goal in the 17th minute by Ella Harms, who settled a pass from Alexandra May, giving DePauw a 4-0 lead heading into the half. The Tigers continued to find offensive success in the second half, scoring four more goals across the final two quarters. May tallied two goals, one of which was assisted by fellow senior forward Amy Apfelbaum in the third quarter. DePauw's seventh goal of the afternoon came in the 45th minute when first-year Sophie Flynnsnuck a pass to teammate Ellie Lochhead. Charlotte Hood scored the Tigers' eighth and final goal of the day after Volpe slipped a pass to her deep in the Presidents' striking circle following a scramble in front of the cage.

DePauw outshot its opponents 19-5 and held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners. All three Tiger goalies found time in the cage, with Bella Lauber recording one save and Scarlett Oaks tallying two for the afternoon. For W&J, starting goalkeeper Grace Erhard completed the afternoon with six saves, while teammate Gillian Meaney tallied one.

The Tigers continue conference play with a road matchup on Wednesday, October 16. DePauw takes on Denison in Granville, Ohio, at 7 p.m.
