Hiram, Ohio - DePauw closed the first half on a 16-2 run and that helped the Tigers to an 89-73 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Hiram. The Tigers improved to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC, while the Terriers dropped to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Hiram built a 15-7 lead in the opening six minutes of the contest before DePauw scored the next seven to trim the margin to one. The game was tied 29-29 before
Ronald Johnson hit two free throws and
Kyle Lillwitz buried a three to give DePauw a 34-29 advantage.
Camden Brown's two free throws and
Sam Jacobs' layup capped the 9-0 stretch and pushed the Tigers' lead to 38-29.
Hiram countered with a bucket, but Lillwitz nailed a three,
Caleb Washington scored on a fast break after Johnson's steal and
Reph Stevenson beat the buzzer to give DePauw a 45-31 lead at the intermission.
The Terriers chipped away at the Tigers' lead in the second half and were within six at 54-48 but Jacobs made two free throws and Johnson hit a trey to start a 9-2 run that pushed the lead into double digits where it stayed the rest of the game.
Lillwitz matched his collegiate high with 20 points and hit five 3-pointers, while Johnson followed with 14 and five assists. Washington added 14 and Jacobs 11 with Brown grabbing eight rebounds.
Trent Jakacki paced Hiram with 26 points and shared the rebounding lead with Mitchel Wiechecki and Ivan Yang as each had seven. Dushawn Hill dished out four assists.
DePauw shot 42.8 percent from the floor and hit 10-of-25 from 3-point range, while the Terriers connected on 43.3 percent from the field and were 12-of-30 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers hit 27-of-38 from the line to Hiram's 9-of-14 and held a 42-37 rebounding edge. The Tigers also committed just eight turnovers to Hiram's 16.
The Tigers host Oberlin on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m.
