Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tigers Tally Second Big Shutout in 5-0 Win over the Fighting Scots

Monmouth, Ill.- In its first road game of the 2023 season, the DePauw men's soccer team recorded another shutout in its 5-0 win over host Monmouth College. The Tigers improve to 2-0, while the Fighting Scots drop to 0-2.

Five different Tigers scored in this afternoon's shutout, with all but one coming off an assist. The Tiger's first goal of the afternoon came in the 20th minute off a penalty kick goal by Sam Thiel, who is now two-for-two on the season.

The Tigers' next goal of the game didn't come until the 59th minute when Tye Williams slipped a ball back into the center of the goalie area for a one-touch goal by Quinn Flaspohler. Less than a minute later, Lalo Castellanos headed in DePauw's third goal off a crossed ball by Ben Weidner.

Up 3-0 with just under 20 minutes left in regulation, Alex Backhaus's corner kick finds Nick Pease on the back post to extend the Tigers lead to four. DePauw's final goal of the afternoon came in the 79th minute after Thiel drew defenders in the middle and passed it out to Backhaus, who snuck a ball across the box to Williams for goal number five.

The Tigers finished the afternoon outshooting the Fighting Scots 27-3 and blanked Monmouth on corners while earning 12 on the other end. The Fighting Scots Christopher Zavala finished the day with 12 saves, while DePauw's Alexander Lundin recorded three.

DePauw returns to Greencastle, Ind., and host Franklin College on Wednesday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. following the women's soccer match against Fontbonne.

I chose DePauw for the mix of strong academics, including the Management Fellows Program, and the opportunity to play the two sports I love and have played most of my life. I also really like the campus and the people I have met along the way.
