Decatur, Ill.-Â Â Despite leading for the middle third of the match, the DePauw men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season after host Millikin University tallied three late goals to lift them past the Tigers, 4-3. DePauw drops to 3-1 for the season, while the Big Blue improves to 3-1.
In the 19th minute of play, Millikin scored its first of four goals, forcing DePauw to play from behind for the first time this season. Ten minutes later, the Tigers' Joel Thompkins evened the score at one after gathering a pass from first-year Brady Smith. The two teams would remain knotted at one apiece for the remainder of the first half.
DePauw would jump to a two-goal lead following a goal by Nick Pease, who was set up with a pass by Tye Williams in the 69th minute, followed shortly after by a penalty kick goal by Lalo Castellanos to put the Tigers up 3-1 with just under 20 minutes left in regulation.
Unwilling to go down easily, the Millikin Big Blue strung together a three-goal onslaught in the final four minutes of play. The first two goals occurred in the 87th and 88th minute, followed by a last-second goal after a scramble in front of the net as time expired.
The two teams were neck and neck throughout the entire game. DePauw got the edge on Millikin, outshooting them 12-11; however, the Big Blue tallied eight corner kicks to the Tigers' seven.
In goal, Millikin's Oliwier Holowinski and DePauw's Alexander Lundin finished the afternoon with three saves.
The Tigers travel to Terre Haute, Ind., on Wednesday, September 13, to face the Fightin' Engineers at 7 p.m. Â
