Manchester, Ind.- Three goals shy of the single-game record, the DePauw women's soccer team opened its 2023 season with a 10-0 shutout over host Manchester University.
The Tigers struck early and often throughout the first half, with its first goal finding the back of the Spartans net in the second minute of play by senior
Whitney Wells.
Sydney Calisto would extend the lead to three after scoring back-to-back goals just four minutes apart from each other.
DePauw's
Annalise Grammel,
Shelby Davis, and
Emi Kapusta extended DePauw's lead to 6-0 with 18 minutes left in the half, and a scramble in front of Manchester's goal in the 38th minute pushed the Tigers' lead to seven heading into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, Grammel tallied her second goal of the night to put the Tigers up 8-0. The final two goals of the evening came in the 72nd minute and 79th minute by newcomers
Ashley Green and
Sara Jacobi, bringing DePauw's goal total to ten.
The Tigers outshot the Spartans 27-2 and recorded six corners while giving up no corners on its defensive end. Manchesters's Madilyn VanDerWeele finished the night with seven saves, while DePauw's
Mallory Mundy and
Aubree Empie split time in goal for the Tigers.
DePauw moves to 1-0 and returns to Greencastle, Ind., to host Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in Reavis Stadium on Sunday, September 3, for a 1 p.m. game.
