Greencastle, Ind.- The DePauw men's soccer team looked dominant in its 4-0 win over the visiting Wilmington College Quakers.
It took the Tigers just two minutes to get on the board following a powerful strike by senior
Lalo Castellanos to put DePauw up 1-0.
Throughout the first thirty minutes of the match, DePauw's speed and pressure from the front line forced Wilmington's backline to play on its heels. After multiple looks on goal,
Sam Thiel finally broke past his last defender and found the back of the Quakers' net to put the Tigers up 2-0 with just over 15 minutes left in the half.
With DePauw starting to pull away, the game's physicality intensified, ultimately leading to a penalty kick for the Tigers in the 37th minute. Stepping up to take the penalty was Thiel, who effortlessly found the bottom right corner to put DePauw up 3-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Quakers attempted to match the Tigers' first-half energy. However, DePauw's ability to move across the pitch and reach 50/50 balls in its attacking half proved to be more than Wilmington could handle. Midway through the second half, a through-ball that was presumably out of reach was saved by
Tye Williams, who whipped it back into the goal area and found the foot of
Joel Thompkins, who put the ball away with one swift touch to give DePauw a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers finished the night outshooting the Quakers 18-8 and earned five corners while giving up just three on its defensive end.
Wilmington's Thomas Grimes and DePauw's
Alexander Lundin finished the evening with four saves apiece.
The victory also was
Steven McCarthy's first win as the head coach for DePauw men's soccer.
The Tigers head to Monmouth, Ill., on Sunday, September 3, to face Monmouth College Fighting Scots at 1 p.m. CDT.
