DePauw Sweeps Oberlin in Home-Opening Twinbill

Greencastle, Ind. - In the home openers for the 2023 season, DePauw swept a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Oberlin by scores of 6-3 and 8-7. The Tigers improved to 7-13 overall and 2-2 in NCAC play, while Oberlin slipped to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

In the opener, Danny Glimco gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single before Nate Curtis hit a two-run double. Oberlin scored one in the second on John Schooner's run-scoring single and DePauw extended the lead to 6-1 in the bottom half of the frame on Cameron Macon's three-run homer.

Oberlin added single runs in the third and sixth innings, but got no closer.

Hunter Hrbek led DePauw with three of its 10 hits, while Cameron Allen added two. Schooner had two of the Yeomen's five hits.

Pearse Riendeau improved to 2-1 after allowing just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings, while Nate Tencza collected his first save. Vince Dolcemaschio dropped to 1-3.

In the nightcap, Oberlin scored a pair in the top of the second before DePauw evened the contest with one in the second on Glimco's solo homer and another in the fourth on Ben Greiner's RBI single.

Max Anastasio's two-run double in the fifth put the Yeomen back in front before Allen's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth and Ty Sucher's run-scoring base hit gave DePauw the lead. The Tigers added one more in the fifth for a 7-4 lead.

Oberlin plated three in the seventh to even the count, but DePauw won the game in walk-off fashion in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Louis Florida hammered a double off the fence in left before Hrbek reached on an infield error that allowed Florida to score.

Aidan Howard had three of DePauw's 11 hits, while Greiner added a pair. Anastasio paced Oberlin with four of its nine hits and Jake Blozy finished with two.

Michael Vallone recorded the final two outs in the Oberlin ninth and improved to 1-1, while Jacob Thompson dropped to 0-2.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 12, with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Franklin.

I chose DePauw because I have heard nothing but amazing things about the school and the people here. On my visit, I fell in love with the campus and everything the school has to offer. The cherry on top is being able to continue on my baseball career.
