Wooster, Ohio- Eight DePauw women's lacrosse members scored in a closely contested 17-14 road win over the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Tigers improve to 10-3 for the season and 2-2 in NCAC play, while Wooster drops to 10-4 and 1-3 in conference play.
The Fighting Scots took an early lead over the Tigers, scoring just 35 seconds into the start of the first period. Two minutes later, DePauw's leading scorer
Emily Napier tucked the ball into Woosters' net to tie the game at one apiece. At the 11-minute mark, the Fighting Scots took back the lead, going up 2-1 over the Tigers in the first period. DePauw would finish the period with a flurry of scoring from four different players while only giving up one goal on the other end to finish the period 5-3.
Wooster opened up the second period with an answer, putting in three unanswered goals to go up 6-5 with over 11 minutes left in the period. The Tigers'
Abby Keane stopped the Fighting Scots' scoring run after gathering a pass from
Bria Randolph to tie the game 6-6 with 8:03 left before the half. By the end of the second period, thanks to a last-second goal by
Graesen Campbell, the Tigers maintained a two-goal cushion over Wooster.
Coming out of halftime, despite an early goal by the Fighting Scot's Lizzie Hardy, the Tigers dominated on offense, putting up five goals off of nine shots while only giving up two goals off of eight shots on its defensive end. Not willing to go down easily, Wooster returned to the field in the fourth period reinvigorated, scoring four goals in two minutes to cut the Tigers' lead to one. Thankfully, DePauw kept its composure and gradually increased its lead to three to beat the Fighting Scots 17-14.
Napier led the Tigers with four goals, Campbell and Keane added three, while Randolph and
Marley Heitman put in two apiece.
Quinn Tegenkamp,
Olivia Sanchez, and
Bridget Driscoll each had one. Randolph tallied three assists, followed by Keane with two of her own.
Caleigh Claar,
Caroline Simon, and Randolph each contributed two caused turnovers throughout the afternoon matchup.
In goal,
Lydia Hollis recorded 13 saves and improved to 10-3 for the season. The Fighting Scots' Ashley Reynolds finished with four saves and dropped to 9-3, and her teammate JG Garrison finished the afternoon with two saves of their own.
Wooster held a 35-29 advantage in shots, with the Tigers and Fighting Scots committing 21 and 23 turnovers, respectively. The two teams tied in draw control wins, with 17 apiece. Driscoll, who collected ten, led DePauw in draw controls, and Wooster's Hannah Shaw led her team with seven draw controls. The Fighting Scots led in ground balls, 25-19, and had five free-position shots to DePauw's four.
DePauw hosts Wittenberg University on Tuesday, April 25, at Reavis Stadium. The DePauw Tigers and the Wittenberg Tigers take to the field at 7 p.m.
