Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw and visiting Wooster were tied going into the seventh inning of both games of their North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader, but the visiting Fighting Scots pulled away in the late innings for wins by scores of 9-3 and 11-7. DePauw dropped to 10-19 overall and 3-7 in the NCAC, while Wooster improved to 13-16 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
In the opener,
Danny Glimco's sacrifice fly scored
Hunter Hrbek to give DePauw a 1-0 lead. The Tigers added a single run in the third as
Aidan Howard singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error before scoring when Hrbek reached on an error.
Wooster's Eli Westrick hit a two-out homer in the fifth before Ryan Kramer singled home Grant Mitchell and John Panstares scored when Dean Brown singled to center.
The Tigers evened the count in the fifth as
Cameron Macon singled with one out and scored on Glimco's double.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the top of the eighth. Brown led off with a double and scored on Colin Leslie's triple. Leslie crossed the plate when Leo Widtmann singled. The Fighting Scots then loaded the bases and Panstares hammered a grand slam to left to make it 9-3.
Macon went 5-for-5 for the Tigers while Howard,
Ty Sucher and
Kyle Boyer each had two of DePauw's 12 hits. Westrick led Wooster with three of their 13 hits with Panstares, Kramer and Brown each finishing with two.
Nate Tencza dropped to 0-3 in relief of starter
Michael Vallone who struck out 12 in seven innings. Wooster starter Corey Knauf improved to 2-2.
In the nightcap, Brown's first-inning sacrifice fly plated Westrick and gave the guests a 1-0 lead.
Carter Knoll's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Boyer and evened the score at 1-1.
Wooster scored four in the seventh as Westrick drove in Leslie with a single before Kramer brought in two with a single and Brown drove in one with a base hit that made it 5-1.
Glimco's two-run double down the left field line scored Howard and Macon and trimmed the deficit to 5-3.
Westrick and Kramer each hit two-run homers in the eighth before Jack Whitehouse singled home Brown and Dan Hanson drew a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 11-3.
Hrbek's solo homer in the eighth was followed by Boyer's RBI single and Macon's two-run single down the left field line.
Glimco and Hrbek each had three of DePauw's 11 hits, while Kramer pace Wooster with four hits and Kramer added two.
Jack Miller dropped to 0-1 after relieving
Pearse Riendeau who struck out nine in six innings. Wooster starter Ryan Sullivan improved to 3-2 and Alex Gerdenich picked up his first save.
DePauw travels to Rose-Hulman on Wednesday, April 26, for a 6:30 p.m. game.
