Bloomington, Ill. - Following a 10-2 loss against Wartburg, DePauw was unable to hold leads in the seventh and eighth innings against Illinois Wesleyan and dropped a 9-8 game to the Titans at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament. The Tigers dropped to 5-16 with the losses.
Wartburg grabbed a 4-0 lead after Sydney Illg hit a solo homer in the first and Reegan Deputy hit a three-run blast in the third.
The Tigers got on the board in the fourth as
Emily Timberman led off with a single and pinch-runner
Ella Ohrvall moved to second on
Katie Mathies' single.
Ella Kuenster then singled to right and Ohrvall came home on the throw.
The Knights added four in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. DePauw's second and final run came in the fifth as
Goose Moore led off with a single, stole second and came home onÂ
Riley Heim's double.
Wartburg added single runs in the fifth and sixth to end the game due to the run rule.
Moore led the Tigers with three of their nine hits while Mathies added two. Five different Knights had one hit each.
Megan Asher dropped to 3-6 with the loss and Ashley Nelson improved to 5-6.
Against Illinois Wesleyan, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second after
Alyssa Anderson doubled home Mathies. After scoring an unearned run in the second, DePauw made it 3-0 in the third when Timberman drove in
Abby Pyburn with a single.
The Titans gained the lead in the third as Madison Moore and Ava Khoury each hit two-run homers.
Hanna Coffel's single in the fourth scored Anderson before Anderson delivered a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Tigers a 7-4 lead.Â
Illinois Wesleyan countered with one in the fifth on Megan Fontnaetta's double which scored Jen Kuhn. In the seventh, the Titans loaded the bases with two outs before Priscilla Peek doubled home Isabelle Piwowarczyk and Anna Beckman, but Maya Black was thrown out at the plate sending the game to extra innings.
The tiebreaker rule was invoked in the eighth and Mathies was placed on second to start the frame. Anderson's one-out ground out moved Mathies to third and pinch-hitter
Emily DuMais reached on an infield single that allowed Mathies to score.
Peek was placed on second in the bottom half of the inning and Bailey Turner advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Casey Wissmiller followed with a bunt single and Moore walked to load the bases. Kuhn and Fontanetta both walked to end the game.
Mathies and Anderson each had two of DePauw's eight hits. while Fontanetta and Turner each had two of the Titans' 11 hits.
Asher dropped to 3-7 with the relief loss, while Nina Mardjetko improved to 6-5.
DePauw opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 8, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kenyon.
