DePauw Drops Twinbill to #14 Denison

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw's game-two rally fell short as the Tigers dropped both games of the North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader to 14th-ranked Denison by scores of 13-1 in seven innings and 14-10. The Tigers slipped to 10-17 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC, while the Big Red improved to 23-6 overall and 10-0 in conference play.

In the opener, Denison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Eric Colaco singled before Charlie Glennon and Noah Leib walked to load the bases. Ari Fierer reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Colaco to score. Jake Welsch then delivered an RBI single which made it 2-0.

Denison extended its lead to 5-0 in the third as Welsch walked and Josh Bohn singled and both moved up a base on a grounder. Owen Wilson then reached on a two-out error that allowed both runners to score. Wilson moved to third on a wild pitch before Alex Vasquez walked. Vasquez then was caught in a rundown that allowed Wilson to score.

DePauw's Drew Straub hit his first homer of the season with one out in the bottom of the third to put the Tigers on the board.

In the fourth Denison again loaded the bases with two outs before Bohn laid down a bunt that hugged the third base line and allowed Leib to score.

The Big Red added four more in the fifth as Wilson scored from second on a wild pitch and Colaco came home on Charlie Glennon's double. Leib then followed with a homer to right to make it 10-1.  Cameron Brickley hit a pinch-hit homer to left in the sixth before the Big Red added two more in the frame to seal the win.

Colaco, Bohn, Brickley and Wilson each had two of Denison's 12 hits. Four different Tigers collected one hit apiece.

Danny Glimco dropped to 2-3 with the loss, while Will Rettig improved to 2-0 with the four-hitter as he struck out five and didn't walk a batter.

In the nightcap, Denison scored an unearned run in the first before DePauw countered in the bottom of the frame when Hunter Hrbek singled and moved to third on Carter Knoll's single. Hrbek then scored on a wild pitch.

Leib's two-run homer in the third made it 3-1 before the Big Red added four in the fourth on just one hit as they drew four walks and were hit by a pitch.

Cameron Macon walked with two outs in the bottom of the sixth before Eli Bell and Danny Sheehan singled. Cameron Allen drew a bases loaded walk to score Macon and cut the Denison lead to 7-2.

The Big Red pushed the lead to 13-2 in the seventh as Bohn led off with a homer and Glennon followed with a three-run round-tripper. Fierer then added a two-run blast.

Macon's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh scored Hrbek and Aidan Howard and kept the Tigers alive.

The Big Red loaded the based in the eighth and Vasquez brought home Bohn with a sacrifice fly.

Sheehan and Ty Sucher each singled in the DePauw eighth before Hrbek drove in Sheehan with a single. Glimco cut the lead to 14-8 with a three-run homer to left. After Knoll doubled, Macon hammered a homer to center.

Welsch led Denison with two of its seven hits. Hrbek and Sheehan each had three of DePauw's 15 hits with Knoll and Macon each collecting two. Macon drove in four.

George Viebrock improved to 5-2, while Griffin Albright dropped to 0-3.

The Tigers host Wooster on Saturday, April 22, in a Noon doubleheader.
