Georgetown, Texas - Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Southwestern scored two in the eighth and seven in the ninth for a 10-9 win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 5-8, while the Pirates improved to 16-4 with its seventh straight year. The two teams square off at 5 p.m. CDT tomorrow.
Aidan Howard led off the DePauw first with a single and moved to third on
Ben Greiner's double.
Cameron Macon walked to load the bases before
Danny Glimco reached on a fielder's choice that scored Howard. An error on the play allowed Greiner to cross the plate.
Southwestern cut the lead in half in the third as Wyatt Kuhlow led off with a single, moved to second on Josh Endo's two-out single and scored on Maxwell Mims' base hit.
Macon led off the Tigers' fifth with a walk, advanced to third on
Carter Knoll's single and scored when
Danny Glimco doubled.
Kyle Boyer followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Knoll and gave DePauw a 4-1 lead.
Knoll's two-run single in the sixth scored Macon and Greiner and extended the lead to 6-1 and a three-run seventh that included run-scoring singles by
Brennan Roach and Greiner pushed the lead to 9-1.
The Pirates scored twice in the eighth as Landon Durdin singled home Eno before Kuhlow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Mims.
In the ninth, Southwestern loaded the bases before Jacob Tanner was hit by a pitch and Christian Melillo followed with a two-run single to trim the deficit to 9-6. Tanner scored on a wild pitch and Melillo came home on Durdin's base hit to make it 9-8. Kuhlow's sacrifice bunt plated Trent Raschke before Matthew Escamilla singled home Durdin with the game-winning run.Â
Knoll had three of DePauw's 13 hits, while Howard, Greiner and
Ty Sucher each had two. Melillo had three of the Pirates' 11 hits with Endo and Durdin each chipping in a pair.
Ben Axelrod dropped to 0-1 with the relief loss. DePauw starter
Michael Vallone struck out 13 in 7 1/3 innings. Kyle Porter improved to 1-0 after pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
