Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw placed four players in double figures and outscored visiting Kenyon, 7-2, over the final two minutes and held on for a 78-68 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Owls. The Tigers improved to 15-8 overall and 7-7 in the NCAC and snapped a three-game losing streak. Kenyon dropped to 7-15 overall and 0-13 in conference play.
Neither team led by more than five in a first half the included five ties and four lead changes as the Tigers took a 35-31 advantage into the halftime.
DePauw slowly stretched the lead to double digits at 48-38 after
Elijah Hales nailed a 3-pointer and
Grant Niego added a jumper. The margin reached as many as 14 at 58-44 following
Ryan Jacobson's driving layup with 10:23 remaining. The Owls used a quick 7-0 run over the next minute to trim the deficit to seven.
The Tigers still led by 12 at 71-59 after Hales knocked in two free throws with 4:24 left. Again, the Owls scored seven straight capped by Alex Boyd's jumper which made it 71-66 with 2:58 remaining. After a DePauw turnover, Kenyon missed a 3-point attempt and the Tigers responded with a second-chance bucket as
Nolan Niego hit a jumper at the 1:53 mark.
Kenyon missed the front end of a one-and-one and, after garnering the rebound, couldn't convert, but were awarded the ball after it went out-of-bounds. Following a timeout, Kenyon was unable to inbound and was whistled for a five-second violation.
Camden Brown's layup with 1:05 left pushed the lead to nine and the Owls got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Hales led the Tigers with 20 followed by
Grant Niego with 13,
Nolan Niego 12 and Brown with 10. Brown recorded a double-double after grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds.
Grant Niego dished out four assists.
Boyd paced Kenyon with 22 points and shared the rebounding lead with Juan Sergio Matabuena as each had six.Â
DePauw shot 47.3 percent from the field to Kenyon's 39.1 percent and the Tigers outscored the Owls at the line, 20-10, as they hit 20-of-26. DePauw also held a 42-30 rebounding edge.
The Tigers travel to Oberlin on Saturday, Feb. 11, for a 3 p.m. NCAC game.
