Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Denison avenged a November loss to DePauw by defeating the Tigers in Neal Fieldhouse by a 76-70 score. DePauw dropped to 14-8 overall and 6-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Denison improved to 11-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
Denison jumped out to a 6-0 lead and the Tigers grabbed the advantage briefly before the Big Red went on a 10-0 run to take a 24-14 lead with 5:49 left in the first half. DePauw trimmed the margin to 32-27 at the close of the half.
The Big Red scored the first five of the second half to push the lead back to 10, but a 9-2 DePauw stretch brought the hosts back to within three at 39-36. DePauw stayed within four for most of the mid-portion of the half before
Kyle Lillwitz nailed a 3-pointer and
Camden Brown converted a layup to give the Tigers their first lead of the half at 56-55 with 9:47 remaining.
That was short-lived as Denison countered with six straight points top take a 61-56 lead. DePauw was within one point after three consecutive offensive possessions, but each time the Big Red responded and eventually extended the lead back to five at 71-66.
Sam Jacobs hit two free throws to trim the deficit to 71-68 with 2:24 left but, following a stop, the Tigers couldn't convert and Ricky Radtke's bucket made it 73-68 with 1:!4 left.
DePauw couldn't convert on its next possession and Radtke hit one of two free throws to make it 74-68 with 36 seconds remaining. After Hales sank two free throws to cut the margin to four, Darren Rubin sealed the win with two charity tosses with 19 seconds left.
Hales led all scorers with 20 points and also grabbed a team-best six rebounds, while Jacobs followed with 13 and Lillwitz 11.
Grant Niego led with a game-high six assists and
Ronald Johnson added five.
Rubin paced Denison with 18 with Radtke turning in a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds along with a team-best four assists. Nick Heath followed with 12 points.
DePauw shot 49.1 percent from the floor to Denison's 48.3 percent and the Big Red held a 35-26 rebounding edge and grabbed 12 on the offensive glass.
The Tigers host Kenyon on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m.
