DePauw Splits Season's First Two Games

Carbondale, Ill. - DePauw scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for an 11-10 walk-off win over Ripon before dropping an 8-2 contest to North Central in the second game of the day in the first games of the 2023 baseball season.

Ripon grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first before DePauw's Ben Greiner led off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced on ground outs by Carter Knoll and Cameron Macon and scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers scored four in the third as Louis Florida and Greiner singled before Knoll drove in Florida with a base hit. Macon walked to load the bases and Cameron Allen plated Greiner after reaching on a walk. Drew Straub reached base on a two-out, infield error that allowed Macon and Knoll to score to make it 5-2.

Ripon scored one in the fourth on a bases loaded walk, but the Tigers came right back in the bottom of the frame with three. Knoll drove in Brennan Roach with a double and Macon's single scored Greiner. Allen followed with a sacrifice fly the scored Knoll and gave DePauw an 8-3 advantage.

The Red Hawks began their comeback with two in the seventh and they added five in the eighth for a 10-8 lead. Danny Sheehan led off the DePauw ninth with a double before Aidan Howard walked. Both moved up on a wild pitch. Roach then struck out but reached first on a wild pitch to load the bases. Greiner's sacrifice fly scored Sheehan. Knoll reached on a fielder's choice that forced Roach at second and then advanced to second. Macon reached on a throwing error which scored Howard with the game-winning run.

Greiner and Knoll each had four of DePauw's 11 hits, while Cam Stampfl and Brock Warren each had three of Ripon's 13 hits.

Holden Biffe collected the relief win for DePauw with Brett Tetzlaff taking the loss.

DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against North Central as Allen and Howard delivered run-scoring singles. The Cardinals evened the score in the bottom of the first and then added three in the second, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Macon led DePauw with four of its eight hits with Howard chipping in two. Rob Marinec had two of North Central's seven hits.

DePauw starter Will Murphy took the loss with Jason Shanner picking up the win with five innings of relief work.

The Tigers open play at the Birmingham-Southern Classic on Friday, Feb. 24 with a 4 p.m. CST game against Webster.

I chose DePauw because I have heard nothing but amazing things about the school and the people here. On my visit, I fell in love with the campus and everything the school has to offer. The cherry on top is being able to continue on my baseball career.
