Kenosha, Wis. - After giving up the game's first goal, DePauw scored the next five and never trailed on the way to a 14-9 win at Carthage in the season opener for both schools.
Rachel Harris gave the Firebirds a 1-0 lead just 2:25 into the contest, but DePauw evened the score just 29 seconds later on
Quinn Tegenkamp's goal and took the lead for good with
Abby Keane's score with 10:43 remaining.
Bria Randolph,
Emily Napier and Keane each scored to give the Tigers a 5-2 advantage. DePauw finished the quarter with a 6-3 lead .
Carthage was within 7-5 before
Marley Heitman,
Bridget Driscoll and Napier each scored to push the lead to 10-5. Carthage countered, but Napier's goal with just three seconds left in the half made it 11-6.
The hosts scored the first two goals of the third before Randolph made it 12-8 with only 28 seconds left in the third. Driscoll and Keane pushed the lead to 14-8 in the fourth before Carthage scored the game's final goal with 2:49 remaining.
Keane paced DePauw with four goals with Napier totaling two. Driscoll led the squad with six ground balls and
Lydia Hollis notched seven saves in goal.
Kayleigh Higgins led Carthage with four goals and three assists with Elizabeth Oda totaling three scores. Maddie Berni and Alessandra Almendarez each had five ground balls and Almendarez recorded six saves.
Carthage outshot DePauw 30-27 and held a 28-25 edge in ground balls.
DePauw hosts University of Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m.
