Lexington, Ky. - Host Transylvania outscored DePauw, 13-4, over the final 4:30 and held the Tigers without a field goal during that time while pulling away for an 88-79 win in the opening game of the Don Lane Classic. DePauw dropped to 7-5 as its four-game win streak came to an end, while the Pioneers improved to 7-2. DePauw faces East Texas Baptist in tomorrow's 1 p.m. third-place game after the Tigers lost to Baldwin Wallace, 85-77.
DePauw scored the game's first five points and quickly jumped out to an 11-2 lead. The Pioneers scored the next eight, but DePauw later used another 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the half at 29-19 with 7:45 remaining. The hosts chipped away at the Tigers' lead and eventually grabbed their first advantage at 34-33 with 1:28 left and led at the intermission, 39-37.
Transylvania led most of the second half and were up, 73-68, before
Caleb Washington buried a three and
Grant Niego hit two free throws to even the count at 73-73 with 5:19 left. The teams exchanged baskets with
Sam Jacobs scoring for the Tigers to tie the game at 75-75 at the 4:45 mark.
Hunter Barr countered with a three before Matthew Teague converted a DePauw turnover into a layup to give the hosts an 80-75 lead. Jacobs knocked down a pair of free throws, but Teague scored four straight to push the Pioneers' lead to 84-77 with 1:32 left.
Reph Stevenson hit one of two free throws, but DePauw got no closer the rest of the way.
Jacobs led DePauw with 22 points, while Washington followed with 16,
Camden Brown added 13 and
Brady Kunka scored 10. Stevenson snagged a game-high 10 rebounds and Niego dished out five assists.
Jaylan Green paced Transylvania with 27 with Teague adding 15. Zach Stahlman followed with 13 and Colby Napier scored 10. Teague grabbed eight rebounds and Green finished with six assists.
DePauw shot 46.6 percent from the field and hit a season-high 12 3-pointers in 20 attempts. Transylvania connected on 49.3 percent from the floor and hit 10-of-28 from beyond the arc. DePauw outrebounded the Pioneers, 36-34, but committed 16 turnovers to the hosts' eight.
