Terre Haute, Ind. - WashU jumped out to a 13-point lead early in the second period and never trailed on the way to a 72-59 win over DePauw in the opening round of the Midwest Challenge. The Tigers dropped to 1-3, while the Bears improved to 2-2. DePauw will face Rose-Hulman in Sunday's 2 p.m. third-place game after the Fightin' Engineers lost to Illinois Wesleyan.
The Bears scored the game's first five points and lead by as many as 12 at 23-11 in the opening period. WashUÂ led by as many as 13 points early in the second and DePauw got as close as eight in the final minute of the half before trailing 37-26 at the break.
DePauw rattled off seven straight points in the third to rim a 10-point lead to three a 45-42 with 4:40 left. WashU closed the period on a 7-0 to push the margin back to double digits at 54-44 as the teams headed to the final quarter.
The Bears extended the lead to 13 on their first possession of the fourth before DePauw closed to within seven with just under three minutes remaining. WashU closed the game on a 6-0 run to take the win.
Ainsley Boras matched a career-high with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while
Riley Mont followed with 13 points and
Ava Hassel 10.
Lily Huntzinger and
Tori Allen each dished out two assists.
Lexy Harris paced the Bears with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Alyssa Hughes following with 18 points. Nailah McBeth added 13 points and Jordan Rich 10 with Catherine Goodwin handing out eight assists.
The Bears shot 50.0 percent from the floor to DePauw's 28.8 percent and WashU held a 43-40 edge on the boards.
