Greencastle, Ind. - Top-ranked and defending national champion Transylvania outscored DePauw, 16-2, over the final 7:27 of the second period and the Tigers got no closer than nine the rest of the way as the Pioneers won by a 60-50 count.
Transylvania grabbed a 16-13 lead after the first period and DePauw closed the gap to 16-15 when
Ava Hassel scored with 8:30 left in the half. The Pioneers scored the next nine before the Tigers stopped the run with a bucket. However, Transylvania wrapped up the period with a 7-0 run to take a 32-17 halftime lead.
The Pioneers pushed the lead to as many as 16 points in the second period before DePauw closed to within nine at 40-31 after
Diana Burgher's basket on the first possession of the fourth period. Transylvania put the game away by scoring seven straight to start an 18-5 run that made it 58-36 with 3:35 remaining. DePauw closed the game on a 14-2 run.
Hassel led DePauw with 13 points and Burgher followed with 11 and team-highs of six rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Tori Allen dished out three assists.
Dasia Thornton led Transylvania with 15 points and three blocks followed by Kennedi Stacy with 13 points and Sadie Wurth with 12. Thornton hauled down eight rebounds with Stacy and Emilie Teall handing out three assists apiece.
The Tigers shot 38.8 percent from the floor to the Pioneers' 38.0 percent, but the guests hit 8-of-28 from 3-point range to DePauw's 2-of-12. Transylvania also held a 35-27 edge on the boards.
DePauw hosts Calvin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, in the opening game of the DePauw Invitational with Millikin and Otterbein squaring off in the 8 p.m. contest.
