Tigers Open Season with Win Over Fightin’ Engineers

Terre Haute, Ind.- In its first dual meet of the 2023-24 season, the DePauw women's swim team defeated Rose-Hulman 188-75.
 
DePauw found its rhythm early after sweeping the 200-yard medley relay to open up the dual. DePauw finished the evening with eight top-three finish sweeps and totaled 12 individual and relay first-place finishes.
 
Two Tigers completed the night with two individual first-place finishes. Libby Ruff earned her top finishes in the 200-yard free (2:03.08) and the 50-yard butterfly (27.40), while newcomer Anya Melson opened her collegiate career finishing first in the 50-yard backstroke (29.43) and 500-yard free (5:28.89). 
 
Fellow first-years Mckenzie Ortolano in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.20) and Zoe Green in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.15) also earned their first collegiate top-finish. 
 
The remaining first-place finishes were earned by Claire Sweetwood, who took first in the 50-yard free (25.20), while Tara Holder finished first in the 100-yard free (56.57), and Cora Gilbert earned her first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.81). Rounding out the Tigers' first-place finishes was Elise Umbach, who swam the 100-yard IM in 1:03.12.
 
DePauw swept both relays, with Melson, Alex Voisard, Ortolano, and Green taking first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.78. The top relay in the 200-yard free relay was paced by Ruff, Gilbert, Olivia Harmsen, and Caroline Stowe with a time of 1:42.87.
 
The Tigers would record a total of 17 second and third-place finishes throughout the dual, leading to its eight top-three finish sweeps.

DePauw's next meet is Saturday, October 14, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The Tigers will be competing in the Indiana DIII Meet, with a start time of 1 p.m.
