DePauw Blanks Wooster for Third-Straight Shutout

Story Links

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw totaled a school-record 39 first downs and recorded its third-straight shutout with a 59-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster. The Tigers moved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in NCAC play.

The Tigers scored on all but two possessions in extending their home win streak to 13 as Drew Moore's 3-yard run early in the first proved to be the only points the Tigers needed. Joseph Sullivan's 27-yard field goal with 13:05 left in the first half pushed the lead to 10-0 before Gus Baumgartner added a 2-yard run and Jaylon Smith caught a 2-yard pass from Wally Renie with 10 seconds left in the half to make it 24-0.

Baumgartner's 3-yard run with 8:52 left in the third and Drew Moore's 2-yard run with 2:56 remaining in the quarter extended the lead to 38-0.

Nathan McCahill's 30-yard scamper in the fourth pushed the lead to 45-0 and DePauw's Tommy Ryan intercepted a Wooster pass on the first play of the next possession and, three plays later, McCahill connected with Robby Ballentine for a 16-yard score. Aidan Baker's 5-yard run with 4:39 left capped the scoring.

DePauw outgained Wooster, 640-185 including 319-6 in the second half. The Tigers also ran 55 more plays than the Fighting Scots and held a 43:04-16:56 edge in time of possession.

Baumgartner rushed for 96 of DePauw's 314 ground yards, while Moore added 72. Renie completed 24 of 33 passes for 255 yards with Smith hauling in nine for 118 yards and Gabe Quigley catching six.

Andrew Yanssens rushed for 49 yards and Mateo Renteria 42. Renteria totaled 35 passing yards and Jacob Dugas 48. Cole Hissong caught four for 37 yards.

Luke Marsh totaled six tackles for DePauw with Brevon Gude and Nolan Tully each adding four. Gude had one sack and Tully forced a fumble.

Alex White led Wooster with 14 tackles with Matt Ulishney finishing with 13.

The Tigers travel to Denison on Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. NCAC game.

NOTES
  • DePauw's 39 first downs broke the NCAC mark of 37 (Wittenberg vs. Wooster, 10/19/13 and Ohio Wesleyan vs. Elmhurst, 9/22/01) and the DePauw record of 33 (at Oberlin, 11/5/2016; vs. Allegheny, 10/17/2015; vs. WashU, 1985)
  • The Tigers' 640 yards of offense were the third-most in program history behind 665 at Anderson, 9/12/2009 and 661 at Allegheny in 2016.
  • The 300-plus yards in both rushing and passing marked the second time in program history it occurred (304 rushing, 333 passing vs. Allegheny, 10/17/2015)
  • DePauw's 13-game home win streak equals the fourth-longest active streak in Division III and the longest by the Tigers since they won 25 straight from 1980 through 1985.
  • The Tigers' last home loss was by a 17-10 score to Wittenberg on September 28, 2019.
  • The three consecutive shutouts was last achieved by the 1985 Tigers with wins over Kenyon, WashU and Taylor.
