Granville, Ohio - DePauw's defense held Division III's ninth-ranked scoring offense 38 points below their season average and the Tigers remained undefeated with a 17-13 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Denison. DePauw, ranked 23 in the coaches' poll and 25 by D3football.com, moved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC, while the Big Red dropped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Following the opening kickoff, DePauw drove 65 yards in nine plays with
Gus Baumgartner scoring on a 2-yard run. The big play came on third-and-nine when Renie connected with Baumgartner for a 32-yard gain to keep the drive alive.
Late in the first, Denison drove to the DePauw 25, but
Jonathan Bruder sacked Big Red quarterback Drew Dawkins for an 11-yard loss on second down on the last play of the quarter. Dawkins completed a 7-yard pass to Trey Fabrocini on third down before teaming with DJ Johnson for a 24-yard gain on fourth down. Three plays later, Fabrocini ran it in from the 1. The point-after was off the mark and DePauw maintained a 7-6 lead.
On the ensuing drive, DePauw converted three third-down plays before the drive stalled deep in Denison territory.
Joseph Sullivan booted a 35-yard field goal to make it 10-6 with 8:31 left in the half.
Later in the third DePauw took over at the Denison 42 and needed just four plays with
Wally Renie tossing a 19-yard scoring pass to
Trent Veith. to push the lead to 17-6 with 1:45 left in the third.
Denison came right back on its next possession as Dawkins completed a 27-yard pass to Billy Guzzo and a 48-yarder to Johnson for a touchdown. The point-after cut the Tigers' lead to 17-13 with 1:11 left in the third.
The teams exchanged punts over most of the fourth until DePauw drove to the Denison 32. Renie scrambled for a first down, but fumbled and Denison recovered at its own 16.Â
The Big Red picked up a couple of first downs, but
David Guhl's 17-yard sack of Dawkins on fourth down ended the threat.
Renie topped the 100-yard rushing plateau for the second time this year after totaling 115 yards on 16 carries. Baumgartner rushed for 57 yards on 19 attempts.
Renie completed 13 of 27 passes for 127 yards. Baumgartner and
Trey Shaw each caught three passes.
Fabrocini rushed for 56 yards on 18 carries, while Dawkins completed 17 of 24 passes for 184 yards. Mack Marston was the top receiver with nine catches for 47 yards.
DePauw's defense recorded nine sacks as
Brevon Gude had four for 30 yards in losses.
Jake Comer led with eight tackles, while Gude, Bruder and Young each had six.
Clay Denstorff paced Denison with seven tackles and the team's only sack.
DePauw outgained Denison, 303-246 including 176-62 on the ground.
DePauw hosts Wittenberg on Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m. on Old Gold Day.
