Richmond, Ind. - DePauw held leads after the first and third sets, but host Earlham won the fourth and then the decisive fifth for a 3-2 (19-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11) victory over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 6-6 with the loss, while the Quakers improved to 6-7.
The match featured 35 tie and 15 lead changes. In the fifth set the teams were tied, 11-11, before Earlham scored the final four points for the match win.
Oliva Karwin paced DePauw with 15 kills and hit .371, while
Ashley Haas had 12 kills and hit .450.
Avery Christy totaled 27 assists and Karwin added 20. Haas chipped in four of the Tigers' 11 aces and shared the blocks lead with
Belle Shelton as both had three block assists.
Grace Myers paced the team with 22 digs. Karwin's triple-double of 15 kills, 20 assists and 16 digs was her second of the season.
Maria Young led Earlham with 16 kills and Aniyah Harrington added 15. Erin Wagner's 43 assists paced the Quakers as did her five aces. Jennifer Shamel recorded 28 digs, while Wagner and Gabby Gerardi had three total blocks apiece.
DePauw outhit Earlham, .189-.101 and held a 61-49 edge in kills. The Tigers, however, had 12 service errors while the Quakers had none. Earlham also held advantages in digs (103-94) and team blocks (8.0-5.0).
The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they host Oberlin at 11 a.m. The Tigers also host Hanover in a 4 p.m. match.
