Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw outscored Wittenberg, 6-0, over the final 42 seconds on the way to a 75-67 North Coast Athletic Conference win. The hosts improved to 10-10 overall and 7-7 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg dropped to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
A first half that included five ties and five lead changes ended with Wittenberg holding a 34-31 lead. The visiting Tigers scored the first bucket of the second half to extend their lead to five, but Nolan Niego countered with a jumper and Elijah Hales added a layup following Grant Niego's steal to cut the margin to one. Nick Wissel scored on back-to-back possessions after Wittenberg turnovers to take a 39-36 lead with 16:57 left in the game.
The guest Tigers briefly cut the DePauw lead back to one, but Grant Niego and James Havrilla each hit threes and Havrilla hit a free throw to push the lead to 46-38. DePauw's lead reached 10 on a pair of occasions with the last occurring at 51-41 after Ronald Johnson's bucket at the 12:27 mark.
Wittenberg quickly rattled off eight-straight points over the next two minutes and eventually regained the lead at 54-53 on Landon Martin's three-point play which capped a 13-2 run.
DePauw's Cooper Mixon converted a pair of free throws and Grant Niego knocked in a three to give DePauw a 58-54 advantage with just over seven minutes left. The hosts couldn't extend the lead beyond four and Wittenberg was within two points at 67-65 after Daniel Asher's layup with 2:21 left. Wissel's basket pushed the lead to 69-65, but Martin countered with a layup to cut the DePauw lead to two with 1:05 left.
Hales extended the DePauw lead back to four on a jumper with 42 seconds remaining and Wittenberg had a chance to cut the lead to two, but Martin missed a pair of free throws. Grant Niego hit both ends of a one-and-one with 26 seconds left and, following a Wittenberg missed 3-pointer, Nolan Niego grabbed the board and made two charity tosses with 15 seconds left to secure the victory.
Nolan Niego led DePauw with 18 points and equaled a career high with seven rebounds. Hales, Grant Niego and Wissel each scored 14 with Hales also hauling down seven rebounds. Camden Brown dished out a career-high seven assists.
Martin paced Wittenberg with 20 points followed by Archer with 12 and Ridge Young with 10. Levi Boettcher grabbed seven boards and handed out five assists.
DePauw shot 44.1 percent from the field including 53.3 percent in the second half, while Wittenberg connected on 50 percent for the game.
Each team had 30 rebounds and DePauw committed just five turnovers to Wittenberg's 12.
DePauw returns to the court on Saturday, February 12, with a 3 p.m. NCAC game at Oberlin.
