Sam Jacobs hit a jumper with 5.9 seconds left which lifted the Tigers to a 77-76 North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers improved to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the NCAC with its fifth straight win, while the Battlng Bishops dropped to 7-17 overall and 4-11 in the conference.
Neither team led by more than five in the opening half with Ohio Wesleyan taking its only lead of the half on Isaac Ward's 3-point play with 29 seconds left to give the Battling Bishops a 35-34 lead.
DePauw grabbed a 57-54 lead on
Eli Ellis' 3-pointer with 11:51 left, but Jessee Battle hit a three and Phil Wallace added a pair of treys to give the Battling Bishops a 63-57 advantage.Â
Ohio Wesleyan's largest lead of the contest came with 5:48 left after Ward nailed a three. They still led by six at 71-65 before
Joe Smith made two free throws,
Reph Stevenson made a bucket and Jacobs hit a three to give DePauw a 72-71 lead with 2:56 left.
Battle's two free throws put the guests back in front before
Caleb Washington's jumper gave DePauw a 74-73 lead with 2:17 left. Neither team scored until
Caleb Washington hit a free throw with 39.9 seconds left to extend the lead to 75-73. Ward's 3-pointer with 28.6 seconds remaining gave the Battling Bishops a 76-75 lead.Â
The Tigers got the ball to Jacobs who drove the left baseline, got past a defender and laid the floater into the basket. A 3-pointer by Ward hit the rim as time expired.
Stevenson led the Tigers with 26 points and his second field goal of the game gave him 1,000 points for his career. Jacobs followed with 19 points and Washington 17. Washington also led with seven rebounds and tied a career high with seven assists.
Battle led Ohio Wesleyan with 26 points followed by Ward with 25 and Wallace with 11. Jake Lowman grabbed a team-high five rebounds and dished out five assists.
DePauw shot 50.8 percent from the field to Ohio Wesleyan's 51.8 percent. The Tigers held a 35-23 rebounding edge for a 17-2 edge in second-chance points. DePauw comitted nine turnovers to the Battling Bishops' 12.
The Tigers wrap up the NCAC regular season on Saturday at Wooster. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
