Box Score Delaware, Ohio - Just three days after losing by nine at Ohio Wesleyan, sixth-seed DePauw knocked out the third-seed Battling Bishops in the quarterfinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament by an 81-71 score. DePauw, now 11-13, advances to face second-seed Wooster after the Fighting Scots defeated Allegheny by an 86-79 score. Friday's semifinal game at Wabash is set for 5 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan finished its season at 15-11.
Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to a 14-8 lead, but Nick Wissel and Nolan Niego hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to even the count. DePauw built a four-point lead at 36-32 after a four-point play by Elijah Hales with 7:32 left in the half, but the Battling Bishops responded with a 6-0 run to take a 38-36 lead. James Havrilla knocked in a 3-pointer and Grant Niego hit a pair of buckets to give the Tigers a 43-38 halftime lead. DePauw held Ohio Wesleyan scoreless over the final six minutes of the half in finishing with a 7-0 run.
DePauw gradually pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 17 at 74-57 after Hales hit two free throws with 7:25 left. Zane Ries nailed a three before Grant Spicer and Jack Clement added baskets to trim the DePauw lead to 74-64 with 4:24 remaining. Wissel and Ries exchanged 3-pointers before Clement and Spicer each scored to cut DePauw's lead to 77-71 with 1:29 left. Nolan Niego hit a layup and Grant Niego knocked in two free throws following an Ohio Wesleyan missed 3-pointer to wrap up the win.
Hales led all scorers with 27 and hit 6-of-9 3-pointers, while Grant and Nolan Niego each scored 11. Nolan Niego led DePauw with seven rebounds and Grant Niego dished out four assists.
Clement and Spicer each scored 14 with Nick Carlson adding 12 and Henry Hinkle 10. Carlson posted a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Spicer handed out six assists.
The Tigers shot 51.9 percent from the floor which was their best shooting effort since December 21 and they hit a season-high 13 3-pointers in 28 attempts. Ohio Wesleyan shot 45.9 percent from the floor. DePauw held a 33-28 rebounding edge and committed eight turnovers to the Battling Bishops' four.
