Olivet, Mich. - DePauw shot 62 percent from the field in the second half and pulled away from host Olivet in an 83-70 win. The Tigers improved to 9-3, while the Comets dropped to 2-6.
Olivet scored the game's first five points and stayed in the lead until
Grant Gohmann hit a jumper and
Nolan Niego nailed a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 13-11 advantage with 9:18 left in the first half. The lead went back-and-forth until DePauw rattled off seven-straight points to go ahead, 25-20. The Tigers took a 29-25 lead into the intermission.
DePauw gradually stretched the margin to double digits at 43-32 after scores from Gohmann and
Elijah Hales. Olivet closed the gap to 52-50 with 9:43 left after a 10-2 run.
The hosts were still within five after Noah Waswary hit two free throws with 2:52 remaining, but
Kyle Lillwitz countered with a pair of charity tosses. Lillwitz then blocked a shot on the defensive end and put back his own miss to make it 73-64 with 2:00 left.
Following an Olivet miss, Hales knocked in two free throws at the 1:47 mark to extend the lead to 11. The Comets briefly cut the lead back to nine, but DePauw hit all eight of its free throws over the final 1:20.
Five Tigers scored in double figures led by Hales and
Camden Brown with 16 each and Lillwitz with 15.
Grant Niego followed with 12 and Gohamann added 10.
Sam Jacobs grabbed 10 rebounds and Hales dished out six assists.
Ryan Bart paced the Comets with 18 followed by Lorris Upshaw with 16 and Ryan Robinette with 13. Haidyn Garrison grabbed eight rebounds and Upshaw had three assists.
DePauw shot 46.7 percent from the floor to Olivet's 39.7 percent and the Tigers outscored the Comets from the line, 20-9. The Tigers held a narrow, 39-35, edge on the boards.
The Tigers wrap up the 2022 portion of their scheduled with a Noon game tomorrow at Kalamazoo.
