DePauw Wraps up 2022 with Win; Hales Has Milestone Day

Kalamazoo, Mich. - DePauw wrapped up the 2022 portion of its schedule with a 79-64 win at Kalamazoo as senior guard Elijah Hales had a record-setting and milestone-establishing day. The Tigers moved to 10-3, while the Hornets dropped to 2-9.

In a game in which he became the 29th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, Hales broke the school record for points in a half with 29 in the opening 20 minutes to eclipse the mark of 27 held by Luke Lattner against Earlham on Nov. 24, 2015.

The scoring went back-and-forth for much of the first half and the game was tied, 23-23, with just over five minutes left. Sam Jacobs put DePauw ahead with a jumper at the 5:11 mark which started a half-ending 23-9 run. Hales scored 19 of those 23 points over the final 4:39 of the half including three 3-pointers in the final 1:20 to send the Tigers to a 46-32 halftime advantage. Hales' first half included 10-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc.

DePauw opened the second half on a 7-2 run and the Hornets got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Hales finished with a career-high 39 points and tied the school record of nine 3-pointers (Steve Lemasters vs. Drew, 12/29/2008). Grant Niego followed with 11 points and a team-high four assists. Ryan Jacobson and Kyle Lillwitz each grabbed seven rebounds.

DJ Courtney paced Kalamazoo with 27 points and shared the team rebounding lead with Lukas Broadsword as each grabbed six.

DePauw shot 45.2 percent from the floor and hit 12-of-31 3-pointers, while the Hornets shot 40.4 percent overall and were 9-of-28 from long range. The Tigers held a 36-33 edge on the boards and committed just nine turnovers to Kalamazoo's 12.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they host Hiram in a 1 p.m. North Coast Athletic Conference game.
