Webster Groves, Mo.- The DePauw men's basketball team improves to 4-1 for the season after defeating host Webster University 79-61 in game two of the Webster Classic.
Â
Webster got on the board first after an early foul following an offensive rebound by the Gorloks. DePauw would knot the game at two in its next possession and then go on a 5-2 run before Webster regained the lead in the 15th minute of play. The Gorloks' 8-7 lead would be the last time Webster would lead throughout the game.
Â
DePauw and Webster would tie the score six times in the first half; however, with five minutes left in the first half, the combination of
Grant Niego,
Elijah Hales, and
Sam Jacobs helped the Tigers pull away and finished the half up 41-25 over the Gorloks.
Â
The Gorloks attempted to chip away at the Tigers' 16-point lead in the second half. Websters' Markus Becton, Jemard Sykes II, and Jason Coleman would combine for 15 points in the first five minutes of the second half; however, DePauw's depth proved too much for the Gorloks to make a dent in the Tigers' lead. With each basket made by the Gorloks, the Tigers managed to put up two more buckets right after, keeping a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half and ultimately putting the game away with a final score of 79-61.
Â
Six Tigers finished the night with eight or more points; pacing DePauw's scoring was Hales with 17, followed by
Camden Brown with 13, tying his career-high total.
Ryan Jacobson put in a career-high nine points off the bench after shooting 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from behind the arc.
Â
Websters' Jason Coleman and Markus Becton led the Gorloks with 11 points apiece, while Jemard Sykes II and Karl Moore each had 10 points. Cole finished the night with three assists and two rebounds, while Sykes II pulled seven rebounds for the afternoon.
Â
Despite the Gorloks outrebounding the Tigers 39-34, DePauw held a 14-7 edge in second-chance points. The Tigers' defense also played a crucial role in maintaining its lead, forcing Webster to commit 13 turnovers, resulting in 14 points the other way.
Â
The Tigers travel to Earlham College on Tuesday, November 22, to face the Quakers at 7 p.m. EST.
