Greencastle, Ind. - In a game that featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, DePauw used a late 9-2 run and held on for an 80-75 win over visiting Rose-Hulman. The Tigers moved to 2-0, while the game was Rose-Hulman's first of the season.
The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Rose-Hulman came back with a 14-4 stretch to take a 3-point lead. The teams battled back-and-forth for most of the half with the Fightin' Engineers taking their biggest lead at 36-30. before taking a 38-33 advantage into the halftime.
DePauw grabbed a 6-point lead on
Camden Brown's 3-pointer with 8:29 left, but Rose-Hulman scored the next eight to take a 64-62 lead with 6:16 remaining.Â
The Tigers came right back with the next seven for a 69-64 advantage after
Kyle Lillwitz nailed a three with 4:05 left. A 5-0 Rose-Hulman run evened the count at 69-69.Â
Grant Niego and
Grant Gohmann each scored to push DePauw's lead to 73-69 with 1:55 left before Rose-Hulman's Bradley Harden cut that lead with a driving layup 18 seconds later.
Elijah Hales came right back with a bucket and, after the guests missed a 3-pointer,
Grant Niego buried a trey with 27 seconds left to extend the lead to 78-71.
Harden cut the lead to five, but Hales hit a free throw with 13 seconds left to seal the win.
Hales led the Tigers with 26 points, while Brown added 11 and a team-high eight rebounds.
Grant Niego had six assists and three steals.
Max Chaplin paced Rose-Hulman with 16 followed by Harden with 11 and Zachary Jackson and Simon Blair with 10 each. Terry Hicks hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
DePauw shot 52.6 percent from the floor and hit 11-of-21 3-pointers, while Rose-Hulman shot 41.1 percent from the floor.
Rose-Hulman led on the boards, 42-34, which resulted in a 19-3 edge in second-chance points.
DePauw hosts Franklin on Tuesday, November 15, at 7 p.m.
